Stepping of Telugu Drama has successfully completed 130 years. In this long journey of Poetic Drama, Padya Natakam was the first thing had witnessed the audience. The Harmonium sound is the indication for the beginning of drama. Mainly in Social, mythological dramas harmonium is the heart of instruments. The Melodious Instrumentalism and action as a blend can only touch the hearts of audience. As the soul of a witched lied in parrot, the life of a singer lies in how well the instrumental melody could uplift the drama. In such art with complete knowledge ‘Potakamuri Kalahastiswar Rao’ had accompanied many drama companies and got a wonderful feedback even from the critics for being so versatile.
Nakrekallu Mandal, Chagallu village was his birth place of Shri Potakamuri Kalahastiswar Rao, who completed his music learning in Guntur. He learned the tips of music from Mahavedi Venkatappaya sastri, who is also the musical guru for famous Late Music Director Chakravarthi garu. Shri Potakamuri Kalahastiswar Rao being a harmonist by profession not only constrained himself to that profession but also is a reason for bringing up hundreds of drama artists who are presently working at very good positions in various TV channels. He received big applauses for enacting difficult roles in his tender age itself.
In the Interview to press Shri Kalahastiswar Rao said that his family had touch with music from the very first beginning of Poetic Drama (Padya Natakam) & sharing his experiences he mentions his memories of taking up the role of president to ‘City Artist Organisation’.In his tenure of being the president he gave helping hand to many famous drama companies all over Andhra Pradesh.
Not only he accompanied to the main musical programs in Air (Akasavani) but also trained the dramatists. He took active part in many drama organizations who felicitated him for his years of work. His property since 60 years was only the claps, applauses, awards and name. For him claps are sweeter than anything else in this world.
Such a devotional artist suffered with poverty at his last stages of life. He happened to depend up on others for this daily survival as a sugar and heart patient. At last his brother’s son joined him in a private hospital, he recovered but soon he had his last breath on April 2009 in Guntur, Taraka Brahma Chari’s house due to cardiac arrest. At his memorial meeting stage artist Union Venue District Director ‘Jonnabhatla Lakshmi Narayana’ said that Kalahasthi was a perfect fit for music, literature who could say the right Raga for any situational Poetry & acted as a judge for some parishads.
As a token of his memory, some memorial services are conducted every 2nd of April. The details of services at his first vardhanthi are under Memorial services.
